MSC World Europa, the newest jewel in Swiss-based MSC Cruises’ fleet, redefines the boundaries of maritime design and engineering. At 333 meters long, with a gross tonnage of 205,700, this futuristic mega-ship accommodates 6,762 passengers and 2,138 crew members across 22 decks.
Designed by dpa lighting consultants, led by Richard Bolt, in collaboration with Martin Francis of Francis Design, the ship’s Outdoor Promenade features an awe-inspiring installation of ‘illuminated trees’, an innovation blending artistry and advanced lighting technology.
At the heart of this 104-meter-long promenade is a record-breaking 11-deck-high stainless-steel dry slide. The sinuous form of the slide becomes a dazzling centrepiece at night, enhanced by the glowing ‘illuminated trees.’ These LED structures, with their rounded profiles and homogenous RGB + 2700k warm white lighting, deliver 480 lumens per meter, combining spectacle with sustainability.
Spanning 2,925 meters, the LEDs operate dynamically via a DMX interface, ensuring energy efficiency through dimming and static modes during off-peak hours.
This eco-conscious lighting design complements the vessel’s commitment to sustainability. Powered by Liquefied Natural Gas, it features advanced water recycling and noise reduction technologies. The MSC World Europa is not only a marvel of engineering but also a beacon of innovation, showcasing how lighting can transform functionality into an unforgettable experience.
