Discussing the major trends at Light+Building 2024 highlights sustainability as a focus for lighting sector leaders aiming for more efficient and circular products. The design of some booths, adopting a waste-minimizing approach, also captured significant interest.
Light+Building 2024: Biomaterials, Adaptive Lamps, and Green Packaging
In collaboration with the University of Camerino and MARLIC-Marche Applied Research Laboratory for Innovative Composites, iGuzzini has launched the new Light Shed Linen suspension through zero-impact raw material research.
This lamp, retaining the aesthetic of a previous design, incorporates a biomaterial derived from linen with a natural binder. This update cuts carbon emissions by nearly 50% and water use by 18% for each piece compared to its predecessor. In addition, the lamp’s core technology introduces innovation with app or voice command control features.
IQ LUX, under the XAL group, also targets circular and sustainable product design. The brand harnesses 3D printing to leverage recycled and bio-based materials, like regenerated PET, cornstarch, or sugarcane (PLA), blending them with wood, concrete, or plant fibres.
Cariboni addresses the colour temperature of light and its influence on the life cycles of surrounding animals and plants, leading to the creation of Spoon. Alfonso Femia/AF*Design designed this urban lighting system that, equipped with an integrated sensor or automated program, adjusts to natural light for proper balance.
Every aspect of a product’s life cycle, including packaging, plays a part in reducing its carbon footprint. The trend towards adopting plastic-free packaging, mainly cardboard, is growing. The RIDI group distinguishes itself by safeguarding its lamps with a biodegradable cap made from cellulose, compostable in twenty months.

Major Brands Showcase Sustainable Booths at Light+Building 2024
XAL‘s booth, a conglomerate including Wever & Ducré, Wastberg, and IQ LUX, embodies functionality and ultra-minimalism. It presents a bare-bones space with visible structures, temporary cardboard furniture, and materials recycled from past fairs.
Object Carpet‘s carpeting, set to be repurposed in XAL’s offices, marks a significant reduction in components, enabling transport with only three trucks, a stark contrast to the twenty-five trucks used in 2018.
Erco directly used the fair’s floor, avoiding extra coverings. The booth’s construction wood and printed fabric dividers will find new life, the former in construction and the latter as bags. The brand minimized material use by renting stairs, scaffolding, and walkways for L+B and designing energy-efficient lighting.
Midgard was awarded the Design Plus Award 2024 for minimal material use and featured a booth with bare floors and displays made of 100% recyclable paper and wood.
