Founded in 2004, YOD Group is a design studio specializing in hospitality. It helps owners and investors build successful businesses by focusing on cost efficiency, ROI, and profitability. The studio takes a 360-degree approach to creating groundbreaking projects, as explained by Dmytro Bonesko, artistic director of YOD Group.

For YOD Group, no restaurant, bar, or hotel exists in isolation: “They are all part of a larger ecosystem—fragments of cultural, gastronomic, recreational, and social contexts”. But how does this philosophy translate into design?
«Some time ago, we developed a concept called “Terroir Design”—meaning that each project is deeply rooted in its surroundings. This can be cultural, where we begin by researching local traditions, visiting artisan workshops and museums to understand them in-depth, and then translating these insights into our design. The historical context is also essential—who lived in that space, how the city evolved, and what shaped its development. Even economic factors play a role, as identifying market opportunities helps us position each project strategically».

Lumo Bistrot: striking a balance between function and atmosphere
Lighting played a pivotal role in Lumo Bistrot. How did you balance its functional and decorative aspects?
«For Lumo, we built the lighting concept around the ambiance. As a lively urban restaurant, it required bright, functional lighting and a strong visual identity. The large, custom-made light fixture above the bar acts as a focal point, catching the attention of passersby through the windows. Spherical pendant lamps were also placed above the tables, providing a soft ambient glow that enhances the dining experience while maintaining Lumo’s signature atmosphere».

Batoni: accentuating materiality with light
Batoni, a Georgian restaurant in Dubai, incorporates lighting as an accent element. What design choices were made in this case?
«The interior design of Batoni revolves around ceramics as the primary material. Terracotta tiles cover the walls and floors, while even the table surfaces are ceramic—an ambitious production challenge. Lighting was carefully designed to highlight these materials from different angles, enhancing their depth and texture.

In the inner dining room, the ceiling fixture consist of illuminated spheres enclosed in a translucent membrane. This shape immediately resonates with guests, as it mirrors churchkhela, a traditional Georgian sweet. The fixture has since become Batoni’s signature design feature».

Buddha Bar: creating intimacy with light
How did you use lighting to create atmosphere and intimacy in the Buddha Bar project?
«With no natural light or windows, the space naturally lends itself to a bar environment where the mood is entirely shaped by carefully planned lighting. We collaborated with renowned Ukrainian designer Kateryna Sokolova to create custom chandeliers—minimal yet striking, blending Eastern and futuristic aesthetics. These fixtures, later launched by French lighting brand Forestier as a collection, embody refined elegance.

In the main hall, lighting is calibrated to foster intimacy, even when tables are only a few meters apart. Only light can perform this magic, transforming a big space into an inviting, personal experience».

Hay Boutique Hotel: a sanctuary of light and nature
Shifting to a different type of project, can you describe the lighting design for Hay Boutique Hotel?
«Hay Boutique Hotel & SPA by Edem Family is a retreat for those looking to escape the city’s hustle. Here, lighting had to be delicate, seamlessly blending with natural materials to create a harmonious atmosphere. We worked with a soft, zoned lighting approach that enhances natural textures while maintaining a sense of warmth and hospitality.

Every light source was designed to be subtle—never overwhelming—ensuring guests feel at ease, recharged, and immersed in a tranquil environment without distraction».
