Highlights

The Chapel of Sound, located in Chengde, China, near the Great Wall, is an architectural and acoustic marvel designed by OPEN Architecture. This monolithic concert hall, which resembles a giant rock, seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings, emphasizing the harmony between human-made structures and nature. The building, made entirely of concrete mixed with local mineral-rich rocks, houses a semi-outdoor amphitheatre, an outdoor stage, and several viewing platforms, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

A lighting design project lead by Dongning Wang

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Chapel of Sound is its innovative lighting design by Ning Field Lighting Design, led by Dongning Wang. The lighting scheme evokes humility, sensitivity, and warmth. It emphasizes the contrast between light and shadow, creating a rhythm that guides visitors through the space. The auditorium, lit by natural sunlight during the day and discreet downlights at night, maintains a minimalist aesthetic, with lighting fixtures flush-recessed into the concrete ceiling. This design not only preserves the structure’s clean lines but also ensures ease of maintenance.

Adaptive Lighting for Various Scenarios

The lighting also adapts to various scenarios, allowing for different ambient light levels depending on the event. Customized recessed wall lamps in the stairs and corridors, along with hidden linear uplights, soften the roughness of the concrete, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The exterior lighting adheres to Dark Sky standards, minimizing light pollution and preserving the natural beauty of the night sky.
